If that first line resembles the famous zen koan "what is the sound of one hand clapping?", it is because it's derived from a parallel philosophical tradition, and exists to fulfil the same purpose. Many readers derive more anger than comfort from the philosophy of the Tao Te Ching. Mitchell does a remarkable job of interpreting the more abstruse metaphors of the fourth-century mind for modern audiences - although, this does of course leave the possibility that it is actually the wisdom of Mitchell, not Laozi, shining through these words. The third is from the most popular modern translation by Stephen Mitchell. The tao that can be told, is not the eternal Tao. The Tao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Tao. Take this collection of more than 100 versions of the famous opening verse: Texts as old as the Tao Te Ching are subject to the problems of both translation and interpretation. Les Misérables is a magnificent, sweeping story of revolution, love and the will to survive set amidst the poverty stricken streets of nineteeth-century Paris. “They certainly won’t care if I kill you.” Tremley turned the weapon on her, and she’d never in her life been more grateful than when Duncan was no longer in harm’s way. Terrified that she would lose Duncan before she had a chance to tell him how much she loved him. “I think they will,” she announced, impressed that she was able to keep the fear from her tone. How dare you think you can use my sins against me? Does it not occur to you who I am?” Tremley laughed, “There are few things in the world I want to do more than this. They’d never get to him in time.ĭuncan raised his hands into the air. As the novel unfolds, Silvie's narrative gradually reveals her sharp intellect, keen powers of awareness and empathy, and her deep connection with the land. She also finds herself incapable of opening up to the students, to forming authentic relationships with them. Even her narrative voice withholds truths from the reader. Because she fears her father's explosive reactions, Silvie guards herself. Forced to participate in the archeological reenactment, Silvie attempts to navigate her father's cruelty in the context of the Professor and his students, Molly, Dan, and Pete.Īt the start of the summer and the beginning of the narrative, Silvie is markedly withdrawn. As the only child of her powerless mother Alison and her abusive father Bill, Silvie has little agency and struggles to find her voice and fight her desires to defy her father's dominance. Silvie is the first person narrator and 17-year-old protagonist of the novel. Then befriends her and keeps wanting to kiss her. This fellow meets filthy rich sophisticated Delhi girl, and falls in love with her in a second. He is from rural Bihar, and cannot speak English (to be clear, this is not why he is annoying). The protagonists are extremely annoying, especially the hero. Maybe Bhagat wrote it keeping future movie adaptations in mind (why write the novel at all then? Why not just the screenplay?) The biggest flaw in the book is the characters. Unfortunately, the only remotely good thing I can say about Half Girlfriend is that it feels more like a collection of scenes than a novel. I liked 2 States though.maybe it’s my fondness for masala movies (not the Akki and Sallu ones), but the story did ring a bit true. The trouble with Bhagat’s novels usually lies in the story, in that most of times there is no story to speak of. Both his language and grammar are quite good, which is more than can be said for Durjoy Datta, Tushar Raheja, and the current crop of campus/job/romance/Indian authors. I am not a big fan of the much maligned Chetan Bhagat as such, but I don’t understand all the brouhaha over his ‘simple’ English either. Ok, this is one book I was really apprehensive about, given the amount of bad reviews it generated even before it was launched. |
