Join us and Oxford American as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of True Grit, April 20-21. But thanks to Charles Portis, we’ll always have True Grit. As a child, he traveled the state, living for a time in Hamburg and Mount Holly. He is the author of Dog of the South, Masters of Atlantis, Gringos, and Norwood. Charles McColl Portis, known to his friends as Buddy, was born in El Dorado in 1933. He was the London bureau chief of the New York Herald-Tribune, for which he also wrote as a reporter. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. About the AuthorĬharles Portis lives in Arkansas where he was born and educated. From a writer of true status, this is an American classic through and through. True Grit is eccentric, cool, straight, and unflinching, like Mattie herself. Marshal, by her side, Mattie pursues the homicide into Indian Territory. With the one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Mattie leaves home to avenge her father’s blood. True Grit tells the story of Mattie Ross, who is just fourteen years of age when a coward going by the name of Tom Chaney shoots her father down in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and robs him of his life, his horse, and $150 in cash. True Grit, his most famous novel, was first published in 1968, and became the basis for the movie starring John Wayne and now the film by the Coen brothers starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Charles Portis has long been acclaimed as one of America’s foremost writers.

Here is a quick description and cover image of book Climbing the Stairs written by Padma Venkatraman which was published in January 1, 2008. Brief Summary of Book: Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman In her introduction, Janet Todd examines Aphra Behn s views of slavery, colonization and politics, and her position as a professional woman writer in the Restoration. This new edition of Oroonoko is based on the first printed edition of 1688, and includes a chronology, bibliography and notes. The novel also reveals Behn s ambiguous attitude to African slavery while she favoured it as a means to strengthen England s power, her powerful and moving work conveys its injustice and brutality. Inspired by Aphra Behn s visit to Surinam, Oroonoko (1688) reflects the author s romantic view of Native Americans as simple, superior peoples in the first state of innocence, before men knew how to sin. Oroonoko s noble bearing soon wins the respect of his English captors, but his struggle for freedom brings about his destruction. "We are bought and sold like apes or monkeys, to be the sport of women, fools, and cowards, and the support of rogues" When Prince Oroonoko s passion for the virtuous Imoinda arouses the jealousy of his grandfather, the lovers are cast into slavery and transported from Africa to the colony of Surinam. Klappentext zu „Oroonoko, The Rover, and Other Works “ The book is a love story, a legal lesson, a comment on the contemporary lifestyles and responsibilities of young, educated Indigenous people today, and a treasure-trove of eloquent and elegant writing. I personally think Butterfly Song is the great Australian novel, because it encompasses so much of this country’s spirit and will touch so many Australian hearts that it couldn’t be anything but. I realise now that Terri was a huge inspiration to me to get more stories like those of her narrator Tarena Shaw on the page, although of course this novel is ‘literary’ and my novels are categorised in ‘chick lit’ or ‘choc lit’. I saw myself in Terri’s work, and all the women I’d been to university with together. My Friday Fave is Terri Janke’s Butterfly Song because this novel was the first time that I saw in Australian literature Indigenous women in an urban setting in contemporary Australia women with career aspirations and love lives and commitment to community. This week’s Friday Fave comes from writer Anita Heiss: …In which I invite someone bookish to share one of their all-time favourite works of fiction and why it’s so special to them.
